Israel is the
most densely excavated country in the world. Since the
beginning of modern times, archaeological missions have
journeyed to the Holy Land to excavate and uncover its rich
history. Archaeology, both recreational and research-based,
is still popular in Israel, often nicknamed the “national
pastime.” Every year, scores of people from around the world
volunteer at excavations in Israel. They return home with
stories lasting a lifetime.
Combining extensive field experience at Israeli digs and
familiarity with North American educational values, Aaron
and Mechael, Dig the Past’s founders, decided to create a
program bringing the adventure and excitement of an Israeli
excavation to North America. In 2004, while working for
Melitz, they launched a one-month program at Detroit’s
Shalom Street Children’s Museum. Since then, their ideas and
projects have expanded, and more and more communities are
experiencing Dig the Past’s unique programs.
Today, Dig the Past has headquarters in both North America
and Israel. We watch proudly as more and more little hands
touch the past and join the adventure of archaeology.
